New Release – Spark Rising is published for the first time today!

Spark Rising is a Dystopian Romance novel, 402 pages. First published December 15th 2014.
I received an advance copy through NetGalley. Thanks to Kate Corcino for the ARC.

All that’s required to ignite a revolution is a single spark rising.

Two hundred years after the cataclysm that annihilated fossil fuels, Sparks keep electricity flowing through their control of energy-giving Dust. The Council of Nine rebuilt civilization on the backs of Sparks, offering citizens a comfortable life in a relo-city in exchange for power, particularly over the children able to fuel the future. The strongest of the boys are taken as Wards and raised to become elite agents, the Council’s enforcers and spies. Strong girls—those who could advance the rapidly-evolving matrilineal power—don’t exist. Not according to the Council.

Lena Gracey died as a child, mourned publicly by parents desperate to keep her from the Council. She was raised in hiding until she fled the relo-city for solitary freedom in the desert. Lena lives off the grid, selling her power on the black market.

Agent Alex Reyes was honed into a calculating weapon at the Ward School to do the Council’s dirty work. But Alex lives a double life. He’s leading the next generation of agents in a secret revolution to destroy those in power from within.

The life Lena built to escape her past ends the day Alex arrives looking for a renegade Spark.

Advance Praise for Spark Rising

“An epic post-apocalyptic romance adventure that leaves all others in the dust, and doesn’t let up on the tension from start to finish. Fantastic world building, a complex, multi-layered plot, and characters your hearts will bleed for. Can’t wait for the next book!”  — Pippa Jay, Two-time SFR Galaxy Award winner, author of Tethered, Keir, and Restless in Peaceville

What can I say about this book? I loved it. It has everything: action, super-charged heroes, snarky characters, romance. Spark Rising is an incredible start to The Progenitor Saga and I am already eagerly awaiting the next book.

Lena is a badass female Spark – one of the most powerful Sparks the Council has ever encountered – only, strong female Sparks aren’t supposed to exist. Carving her life out in the wilderness beyond the Relo-Cities, Lena has survived by staying out of the Council’s radar. When Council Agent Alejandro Reyes shows up on her doorstep, her whole life gets thrown into chaos.

Corcino’s world building is brilliant – mixing a post-apocalyptic world with America as we know it today. Lena’s character is strong, determined, and hell-bent on revenge after she discovers her father has been murdered and that the rest of her family is in danger because of what she is.

The relationship between her characters is dynamic and enticing. You can feel Lena’s heartache, her confusion, her joy. Personally, I’m a fan of the snarky comments that the characters make to each other. There were a few times Thomas’s remarks to Alex made me laugh out loud, in particular.

Although this story is part of a series, it does well as a stand alone. There’s no giant cliffhanger at the end, but it still leaves you wanting more. No spoilers, but all the little missing pieces from throughout the book are revealed in one ‘wow’ moment as they fit together to reveal a small part of the big plan.

Spark Rising is a must read for the festive season for any fan of dystopian, adventure, romance, or just good fiction in general. I highly recommend it!

Kate Corcino is a reformed shy girl who found her voice (and uses it…a lot). She believes in magic, coffee, Starburst candies, genre fiction, descriptive profanity, and cackling over wine with good friends. She’s been a legal videographer, a teacher, and a law student, and believes in chasing dreams. She also believes in the transformative power of screwing up and second chances. Cheers to works-in-progress of the literary and lifelong variety!

She is currently gearing up for the dual releases of Ignition Point and Spark Rising, the first books in the Progenitor Saga, a near future post-apocalyptic dystopian adventure series with romantic elements, science, magic, and plenty of action.

She lives in her beloved desert in the southwestern United States with her husband, several children, three dogs, two cats, and a fat, happy guinea pig.

Strong girls—those who could advance the rapidly evolving matrilineal power—don’t exist. Not according to the Council.
* “Ward” introduces Thomas, a thirteen-year-old boy rescued from Scavengers, marauding slavers who murdered both his biological and foster parents and sold the highly powered boy to the highest bidder—the Council of Nine. Dumped at the Ward School to train his abilities, Thomas must learn to survive among a new breed of savages…the boys who have been training there since they were five and the men who must hone them into weapons.
* “Blood and Water” is the story of Lucas, a young man who has spent his childhood shunned by his powerful, religious family for the crime of being born a Spark. On the cusp of attaining his place in the world his grandfather intends to re-shape, Lucas will discover the heavy price of belonging. Will he pay it, or will he count the costs and deem them too high?
* “Ghost Story” shows how lives lived on the edge—of society, of safety, of sanity—intersect. Lena, a highly powered runaway, fled a life of hiding from the Council. Elias is one of the so-called New Barbarians, those who choose to live free, if hard and dangerous, lives. Wounded and dying, he hunts the Scavengers who killed his family and took his brother to sell. A chance meeting in the desert of what was once New Mexico will change them both forever.
A collection of three related short stories, Ignition Point offers a glimpse into the lives of characters from the upcoming novel, Spark Rising.
