What I’m Reading: July 12th to July 19th

It’s YALC week and I’m hoping that I can finish off my YALC TBR. I’ve got a post that I’ll be putting up on Friday regarding all the books that I’ve read for the event, so be sure to keep an eye out for that!

Before They Are Hanged (The First Law, #2)

I’ve been reading this one for the last day or so and I’ve really gotten into it. I love Joe Abercrombie’s writing, it really draws you in and the worlds that he creates are so rich and realistic. I’ve been loving this one so far, it’s continued the story well and I’m excited to see what happens next.

Currently on page 39/570.

I have no idea what this book is about and I’ve never read anything by Patrick Ness before so this will be a wonderful surprise experience. I’ve heard many great things about Patrick Ness so I’m excited to see what his work is like.

I met Lucy at Wales Comic Con in November of last year and she was just the loveliest person I’ve ever met. I got a signed copy of her book but haven’t gotten around to actually reading it yet. I’ve not read a lot of steampunk books so I’m excited to pick this one up and see what it’s like.

I haven’t read these books by Samantha Shannon yet, even though I’ve had them for quite a while. I have a signed hardback copy of The Mime Order which the lovely folks at Blackwell’s in Edinburgh sent to me after she had an event there that I was unable to attend. I’m looking forward to reading both of these books back to back.

I was lucky enough to be chosen to review this book for MaximumPop! through Twitter and I was so happy when I got a paperback copy of this book in the post. The blurb drew me in instantly and I didn’t even realise when I requested this from MP that Amy Alward was going to be at YALC. So, bonus book I guess!

Finally, we have this beauty. I’ve heard so many great things about this book and I have been immensely enjoying it so far. I really wish I had read this months ago when I actually got it because it’s amazing.

I’m really hoping that I can get to all these books but it’s highly unlikely that I’ll be able to read seven books (eight if you include Slated). I’m going to give it my best shot. If I didn’t get queasy reading paperbacks while travelling, I’d totally be reading during car/plane/train trips down to London!

As well as trying to read all those books, I’ve got a lot of my reviews written up and scheduled to go up this week. There’ll be two or three a day for most of the week so lots to look forward to, as well as the Indie Showcase later today!

  1. Great book haul! I just read The Blade Itself by Abercrombie and loved it. I’m a huge fan of Glokta. Bayaz, Jezal and Ferro are awesome, too. I have a couple of review commitments before I get to the rest of the series, I’m so looking forward to reading them 🙂

    • I read The Blade Itself back in November or December and this is the first of me getting to Before They Are Hanged. Such fantastic books though! I’m really excited to meet Joe Abercrombie this weekend at YALC 😀

      • There’s also his grimdark YA Series, The Shattered Sea, I heard a lot of great things about it and looking forward to reading it too. Lucky for you to meet him! I live in Finland and too broke to attend to any book events outside of Finland :/
