I’m going to be straight from the get go. I’ve only read City of Bones and maybe half of City of Ashes so I’m not entirely a huge fan of The Mortal Instruments series to begin with. I was intrigued by the concept of this book being turned into a tv show though, so I decided to check it out.
I am still underwhelmed by this series.
Now, granted, I’ve seen die hard fans that have hated the show, so perhaps it’s not the best idea to base my opinion of the series on this show. But still. Wow, it was bad. The acting wasn’t bad, in general. I just found everything to be rather… cringey. It was painful to watch at points.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the changes they made from the book, especially with the introductions of the Shadowhunters to Clary. I found that my memory of the book was a bit foggy so I got confused over which was Alex and which was Jace for a little while as well (for some reason I had it in my head that Alex and Isabelle were blonde and Jace was dark haired).
The episode was rather choppy. It jumped so much from one point to the next that it was a little hard to keep up, especially when it jumped from the present to the past and back again. Also, am I just imagining that Jocelyn wasn’t the one to give Clary a necklace – is the necklace even in the book?! I don’t know, the mother scenes felt off to me. I was sure she was kidnapped before Clary even returned from the gig.
On the plus side, I loved Luke and Magnus. I will be continuing to watch the show, if only for those two. Valentine does seem to be a decent villain at this point, although I wasn’t expecting to see him quite so soon. I would have liked a longer build up to him. I’m intrigued to see how they piece together the plot of the book into the series since they haven’t exactly gone religiously chronologically right now.
I’m not a fan of the actress that plays Clary. She isn’t believable for me and so I’m finding it hard to lose myself in the series with her at the front of it. Simon wasn’t quite what I was expecting either (um, hello, abs people!) but I’m withholding my judgement on him for now.
The special effects were great at points, terrible at others (Clary disappearing into the portal? Could’ve been done so much better) but the creatures themselves were pretty decent.
I liked the glimpse of the Institute that we got at the end of the episode and I’m looking forward to seeing more – despite how badly I thought of this episode.
My final thoughts are simply this: Perhaps I was biased to dislike the show from the start since I didn’t particularly like the first book and am seriously struggling to get through the second. I’d like to give this show a proper chance though (I usually give a new TV show three episodes before I decide whether to stick with it or not).
We’ll see if my opinion changes.
There’s definite room for improvement but they have a giant scope for exciting and interesting scenes ahead so I’ll give it a chance and see what happens.
Have you watched the Shadowhunters show yet? What did you think of the first episode?
