“I like to smell my own farts…” Gah! Someone shut me up!
It’s been 92 hours since Beaky last told a lie. So far he’s survived two full days of school with only three light beatings, two telling-offs and one wedgie … but the annual school trip is going to take Beaky’s survival skills to a whole other level – especially as a mix up in the school office means that Beaky and his class are on a trip to Learning Land, an educational theme park aimed at eight-year-olds. And home to cheery-but-creepy Clumso the Clued-up Clown whose job is to dish out fascinating facts to one and all.
But there is worse to come when Beaky’s partnered with Wayne, a.k.a the school bully, who has a morbid fear of clowns. With Beaky unable to tell a lie and Wayne intent on beating him up, things aren’t looking good. And that’s before they find themselves on the run from a manic clown who’ll seemingly stop at nothing to track them down…
After loving the first book in the Beaky Malone series, I was delighted to receive a copy of the next book in the series, sure that it would be as hilariously disastrous as the first. For those who haven’t read the first book, Beaky and his sister were in a mysterious shop run by an older woman who had a love for pickled onion crisps. When Beaky jokingly used her truth-telling machine, he lost his world-class lying abilities.
It’s only been a few days since Beaky lost his lying ability and already he’s been beaten up, punished, and accidently spilling secrets everywhere. No one believes him when he says he’s telling the truth and to make matters worse, he’s about to go on a school trip with Wayne, the school bully. Desperate to find Madame Shirley and get his lies back, Beaky and his sister start some research, but things take a turn for the worst when they find some answers.
This book is perfect for a middle grade audience. It’s got everything: jokes, rotten luck, poo! Not to mention the crazy clown, the school bully who just so happens to have a fear of said clown, and the world’s worst theme park.
I fell back into Beaky’s world from page one and flew through this book just as easily as the first. You get lost in the world, and poor Beaky’s rotten luck. Accompanied by Katie Abey’s brilliant illustrations, Beaky’s misadventures really pop to life on every page.
This is a series that will definitely be a huge hit with younger readers, and parents too. I’m already excited about the next book and what lies ahead for Beaky – it can’t be anything good!
