Mini-Reviews!

I was surprised that there wasn’t actually more in this category as this is usually my go to genre wheelhouse. Below are mostly fantasies with supernatural themes being prevalent in most.

29236299Gemina – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Release Date: October 16th 2016

Source: Paperback purchased from Waterstones

Illuminae was one of those books that was so different to read that it immediately enthralled me so I was super excited when I finally got my copy of Gemina. With different characters to follow, more IM messages and codes and people dying, it gives you everything you loved about Illuminae and pushes it even further. I loved the different layout and the story being told mostly through IMs. This series is my favourite sci-fi and is actually what brought my interest around to reading more sci-fi!

30986409Of Sand & Malice Made – Bradley P. Beaulieu
Release Date: September 8th 2016
Goodreads
Source: Hardback from the publisher, Gollancz

This book is actually a prequel to a series that I have never read. Having said that, I didn’t feel lost or confused and the story was actually super intriguing. It’s piqued my interest enough that I may eventually pick up the series (if I ever get through my mountain of a TBR pile!). Following Ceda, the youngest pit fighter in history, as she battles against a being of ancient times while trying to keep her true identity hidden, it’s a fantasy that’s got everything going for it.

Release Date: January 12th 2016

This is a story about witches in the era of the Salem witch trials. It is utterly brilliant in its story-telling and captivating in its description. The story is clever, with a few twists that took me by surprise and an ending that is killer. Definitely a must read for fans of fiction involving witches.

26720262Secrets in Phoenix – Gabriella Lepore
Release Date: October 13th 2015
Goodreads

I was drawn to this book originally because of the description and it didn’t disappoint me. There was so many directions this book could have gone and for me I loved the way that things were revealed. The school and its inhabitants were all brilliantly written and the atmosphere kept you sucked into the words. An excellent read.

31351883Mistborn: Secret History – Brandon Sanderson
Release Date: August 1st 2016
Goodreads

It goes without saying that Sanderson is one of my favourite authors of all time. I may not have read all the books in his catalogue just yet but what I have read, I’ve fallen in love with. This glimpse into the other side of Mistborn was super intriguing but I can’t say too much without spoiling what the book is about. If you’re a fan of the Mistborn series though, you’ll love it.

18806259Storm Siren – Mary Weber
Release Date: August 19th 2014
Goodreads
Source: eBook purchased from Amazon

I’ll admit, I don’t remember much about the beginning of this book, but I know that the ending had me immediately reaching for the second book in the series. It’s about an elemental slave and a war that’s brewing between two countries. It’s got great intrigue and a villain that just gives you the shivers. It’s a series that I’m very excited to continue soon.
